Further analyses of data from Tracewski et al., with respect to criterion B2

This discussion was first published as part of the 2018 Red List update. At the time a decision regarding the status of several species was pended, but to enable potential reassessment of these species as part of the 2019 Red List update this post remains open and the date of posting has been updated.

Further analysis of the data outputs of Tracewski et al. (2016) has identified additional species that could potentially warrant uplisting based on data relevant to criterion B2. The first topic outlining these analyses can be found here.

The species which are still open for discussion are Macgregor’s Honeyeater (Macgregoria pulchra), Giant White-eye (Megazosterops palauensis) and Blue-eared Lory (Eos semilarvata).

The table outlining the additional seven species can be found here: Assessment of further species with potential uplisting under criterion B2

    Preliminary proposals

Based on available information, including additional information from the Brazilian Red List, our preliminary proposal for the 2018 Red List would be to list:

    Buff-breasted Tody-tyrant as Vulnerable under criterion B2ab(i,ii,ii,v)

Macgregor’s Honeyeater as Endangered under criterion B2ab(v)

Yap Olive White-eye as Near Threatened under criteria B1ab(v)+2ab(v); D2

Golden-winged Laughingthrush as Endangered under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v).

Bougainville Bush-warbler as Near Threatened under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v); C2a(i).

Blue-eared Lory as Near Threatened under criteria B1ab(v)+2ab(v).

The preliminary proposal for Giant White-eye is to pend a decision until 2019 and so retain the current listing as part of the 2018 Red List update.

There is now a period for further comments until the final deadline in mid-July, after which the recommended categorisations will be put forward to IUCN.

Please note that we will then only post final recommended categorisations on forum discussions where these differ from the initial proposal.

The final 2018 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in November, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.

Recommended categorisation to be put forward to IUCN

Following further review, it has been decided that a decision regarding Macgregor’s Honeyeater and Blue-eared Lory will be pended until 2019. Therefore, these species will retain their current Red List category in the 2018 Red List update.

Final 2018 Red List categories will be published on the BirdLife and IUCN websites in November, following further checking of information relevant to the assessments by both BirdLife and IUCN.
