There is some confusion over the level of habitat fragmentation relevant to this species. Archived 2015 topics: Carrizal Seedeater (Amaurospiza carrizalensis): new information requested.

Carrizal Seedeater Amaurospiza carrizalensis was only described in 2003, shortly after which habitat at the type locality was destroyed. Consequently the species was listed as Critically Endangered with a suspected global population of fewer than 50 individuals and declining. However, surveys in late 2007 and 2008 recorded the species in seven areas in the Caroní basin. Declines are still suspected because other potentially suitable habitat continues to be destroyed. However, the low number of records may be partly due to the difficulty in surveying its habitat. If the species has proven to be more common and widespread and its habitat less threatened than was initially feared then it may warrant downlisting to a lower category of threat. Continue reading

Archived 2015 topics: Long-tailed Woodnymph (Thalurania watertonii): request for information

Long-tailed Woodnymph Thalurania watertonii is listed as Near Threatened under criterion B1a+b(i,ii,iii,iv,v) on the basis that it was thought to have a moderately small range within which its habitat is severely fragmented and its population is suspected to be declining owing to habitat loss. The species’s Extent of Occurrence has now been updated and is estimated at 34,800 km2, which no longer approaches the threshold for Vulnerable under the B1 criterion. This suggests that the species is eligible for downlisting to Least Concern.

Archived 2015 topics: Plain-flanked Rail (Rallus wetmorei): request for information

The total population might be assumed to fall in the range of 50-249 mature individuals, based on the paucity of recent records and the small number of known localities. Its population is suspected to be rapidly decreasing as its mangrove habitat is lost or degraded owing to coastal housing, tourist and industrial developments, pollution from domestic sewage and agricultural run-off, sedimentation and the restriction of water flow by road-building. In the absence of further information, and if the known population is indeed fewer than 250 mature individuals, in continuing decline and with over 90% of mature individuals in one sub-population, the species might qualify as Critically Endangered under criterion C2a(ii). Palm Crow Corvus palmarum is listed as Near Threatened under criterion B1a+b(iii,v) on the basis that it was considered to have a moderately small range in which habitat degradation and hunting are causing a population decline.
